The 3/50 Project is an initiative to support local businesses. The concept is simple: pick out three small businesses that you would be very sad to lose if they went under, and commit to spending at least fifty dollars a month between all three. It's a small step, and doesn't sound like much, but if enough of us do it, it will have huge effects.

Let's stand up and support our local small businesses! Each one, in its own, unique way, is an irreplacable part of our community and culture.

Here's the list of the Peninsula area businesses I personally recommend and support as often as possible:
A new chef is flown in from Europe every few months, keeping the menu fresh and ever-changing. The owner and staff are tremendously friendly, and I can attest that, unlike some restaurants, the smiles stay on in the back of the house as well as in front of paying clients (I worked there briefly). I can also attest from personal knowledge that the ingredients used are all top-quality and the kitchen is probably cleaner than my own home kitchen every dreamed of being. So if you're concerned about what the employees get up to in the back room, this is a good, safe spot to stop by for breakfast, lunch, or dinner. . . . or just some of their awesome coffee and dessert!
I can't list every single great place in the area. Help me out: post your own list on your web site. And please, do go visit  the Official 3/50  web site to find out the official deal on this great project! Here's the address: http://www.the350project.net
Why I support them: There are only two independant shops in Williamsburg that I know of, at this time, where one can buy art supplies; Walls Alive and the School of Art. Michael's is due to open in sometime in the next year, but I, for one, would rather shop at a small, local business than a mega mart store. And the folks at Walls Alive are so friendly!
This store is so astounding that I just don't have the words. Really. Truly. Check out their web site (click on the store name, above) to see what I mean. Better yet, stop by in person (and try not to drool too much, it ruins the carpet).
Jimmy's (Norge AND Monticello)
Why I support them: Well, they have terrific food, great service, reasonable prices, and a very friendly, casual atmosphere . . . so why wouldn't I? And now, for those of you who never go to Norge, you can pop over to Monticello Ave.; they've just opened up another branch in the Ukrop's plaza, where Spectators used to be. Stop by and welcome them to this side of town!

Why I support them: Coco offers first-rate and knowledgable service, along with a constantly changing array of the best chocolates I've ever had. They offer indoor and outdoor dining, stay open late, and have light meals available as well as mixed drinks and fondues. What's not to love? And did I mention the service is terrific?

This has seriously got to be the best little store that nobody has heard of.

The owner, Naheed Tabibi, travels around the world--she just got back from a trip to Dubai--to search out the best unique items at the best price for her customers.

From rugs to jewelry to clothing and much much more, this is definitely a shop to stop at . . . especially if you like the namesake item, Lapis Lazuli!
